Explanation
The stomatal mechanism within plants is vitally responsible for the process of transpiration, gaseous exchange and photosynthesis. The stomata constitute small orifices or apertures which are governed by specialized cells known as guard cells. These are responsible for accommodating the opening and closure of stomata. When the guard cells are swollen or turgid due to the high volume of water or due to a high concentration of potassium ions; it is at these conditions one can observe the opening of the stomata. Conversely, when guard cells diminish due to exorbitant loss of water, they become flaccid and this results in the closure of stomata. Hence, we can accommodate this by determining that stomata are open, when guard cells are turgid and are responsible for the flow of water, gases, the process of photosynthesis etc.
