Answer

C

Explain

In order to answer this question correctly, you need to know the amount of Adenosine Triphosphate (ATP), the molecule that provides energy for cellular processes, each of the following processes yield: 1. Lactic acid fermentation 2. Glycolysis 3. Electron transport chain 4. Alcoholic fermentation. Based on current scientific knowledge, out of all the choices given, the electron transport chain produces the most ATP. This process is a part of Oxidative Phosphorylation which takes place within the Mitochondria of human cells. The truth of this claim is rooted in the fact that as electrons are transferred along the electron transport chain to molecular oxygen, each step becomes an exothermic reaction releasing energy used to establish a proton gradient that drives the synthesis of ATP. Compared with other given processes, the amount of ATP produced by the Electron Transport chain is significantly larger - usually between 26 and 28 molecules for each molecule of glucose processed. Lactic acid fermentation, glycolysis and alcoholic fermentation, produce significantly fewer molecules of ATP.
