Answer

1. Perfectly competitive markets contrast greatly to pure monopoly markets, through elements like number and kind of sellers and buyers, nature of the product, freedom of entry and exit, control over price, and perfect information availability.

2. Occurrence of monopolies can be attributed to control over key resources, government privilege, high initial costs inducing economies of scale, aggressive business behavior, superior technology, patent rights, and network externalities.

3. The magnitude of a firm's monopoly power is governed by factors namely demand elasticity, ease of market entry, competitive behavior, to name some.

4. Monopolistic competition characterizes itself through a large number of firms selling heterogenous products, easy market entry and exit, substantial non-price competition. It bears some aspects of a monopoly (non-identical products)& perfect competition (interplay of demand-supply and no hurdles during entries & exits while differentiating itself too).

Explain

1. A perfectly competitive market is characterized by a multitude of buyers and sellers, homogeneous products, free entry and exit, and complete information. Every firm is a price taker - they don't choose the price but accept the market one. On the other hand, a pure monopoly refers to a single seller in the market with no close substitutes, significant barriers to entry, and strong pricing power. Prices are set to maximize profits.

2. A monopoly may occur due to a variety of reasons: exclusive control over important resources, government regulation, network effects, high capital or production costs causing economies of scale and hence, a natural monopoly, aggressive business practices, technological superiority, and licensing or patent rights.

3. The degree of monopoly power depends largely on the elasticity of demand for the product, the ease of entry into the market, and the degree of competition, among others.

4. Monopolistic competition involves many sellers offering differentiated products, easy entry and exit of firms, and significant non-price competition. It resembles monopoly in offering diverse products but unlike monopoly, tight price control is minimal. It is similar to perfect competition through the interactive relationship between supply and demand, freedom of entry and exit, yet product differentiation occurs within it unlike perfect competition.
