This statement "Fats are not a necessary part of our diet" is not correct. Our body requires fats which play vital role in numerous physiological functions. Fats act as energy stores, support cell growth, protect organs, keep body warm, produce important hormones and also help in absorption of certain nutrients. Contrary to the popular belief, not all fats are unhealthy. Unsaturated fats -- found in fish, nuts, seeds, avocados, olives and vegetable oils -- are beneficial if consumed in moderation while excessive consumption of saturated fats, typically found in red meat and dairy products, should be avoided as they can raise the level of 'bad cholesterol' in the body potentially causing health problems like obesity, cardiovascular diseases, etc. So integral intake of unsaturated fats should be part of a balanced diet.
