Answer

Filtration should be used to remove the insoluble excess.

Explain

When an acid reacts with a metal or insoluble base, soluble salt and an insoluble excess are formed as products. The insoluble excess needs to be separated from the mixture to get the desired product. This can be achieved by using the method of filtration.

The physical process of filtration separates solid particles from a liquid by passing the mixture through a filter - a barrier with small holes that allows only smaller particles (in this case, the liquid solvent) to pass through and trap larger particles. The insoluble substances will be trapped on the filter and the filtrate (the liquid that has passed through the filter) will be the soluble salt.

Remember safety rules should always be followed when conducting filtration. You should always set up the filter funnel with filter paper and another filter container below it used to collect the filtered liquid.

Filtration is used in chemical laboratories to extract solid from a liquid in which it is not soluble. Owners of an aquarium also use filtration to keep the water clean.
