<p> When a phosphate group is added to a molecule, it's a process called phosphorylation. Phosphorylation is a key part of several cell processes. In biochemistry, phosphorylation of a molecule is often associated with activation of a function or a change in the protein's activity. In terms of energetics, there is a debatable aspect on whether the reaction is endergonic or exergonic. To clarify, an endergonic reaction is one that requires energy to be driven. On the contrary, exergonic reaction is essentially an energy releasing process. However, the process of phosphorylation using ATP (which is more common), transforms ATP into ADP with the release of energy, hence more fundamentally, it's associated as exergonic.</p>
