Rutherford's famous gold foil experiment showed that atoms are mostly empty space with a small nucleus having large mass located at the center. Because most alpha particles passed through the foil with little or no deflection, this demonstrated that an atom's mass and positive charge are concentrated in a small central nucleus. Later experiments and scientific discovery led to the idea that this nucleus could be divided into smaller basic particles (known as protons and neutrons). Where, protons are positive in charge and neutrons are neutrally charged.</p>
