Temperature is a key physical property that represents the amount of heat energy in a body or environment, and it's commonly measured in our daily lives for various reasons such as cooking, modifications of room environments etc. The equipment we use to measure temperature is called a "thermometer." The thermometer is based on the principle of expansion of material due to increase in thermal energy (heat). For instance, a common type of thermometer is a mercury-in-glass thermometer, where a small pool of mercury in a glass tube expands and rises up the tube when exposed to heat, and contracts and falls down the tube when cooled. The level to which the mercury rises correlates with the temperature, which can be read off a scale etched along the glass tube.
